Hammam!
This afternoon I finally got to go to a hammam, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I missed out in Turkey and on Rhodes, so I was really excited. To be more specific, this was a hammam-styled spa named Hammam. It has other treatments, but I chose the steam room for the more authentic experience. Because its more a spa, and not an actual public turkish bath, it was more...

Springtime in Paris!
Sorry I haven’t updated in a while, but I’ve been on spring break. After Crete, I headed back to Athens for a few days, where we explored some museums and neighborhoods that we don’t normally have time to during the week. After that, it was off to Paris!!
Now Paris hasn’t always been a place that I really wanted to visit. I found it a little too cliche, or snobby or...

Delphi and Thessaloniki!
This week my abroad program took everyone on a trip to Northern Greece. So far we’ve been to Delphi and Thessaloniki.
Delphi was the ancient center of the world. Myth says that Zeus released two eagles - one flew east and one flew west. They circled the earth and met in Delphi. It was the spiritual center, as it housed the oracle of Apollo, and a physical central meeting place with the...

Archaeology Jokes
So when you’re doing a lot of one academic thing (in this case - archaeology) things can start to get a little nerdy. My friends and I keep cracking archaeology jokes that we think are hilarious, but other kids in the program who aren’t studying archaeology (a surprisingly large amount) don’t necessarily find us as amusing as we do. I had to write down a few of my favorites - I...

Classtime!
So this semester I’m taking classes that deal almost exclusively with Ancient Greece (makes sense, right?). I’m taking Ancient Greek Sculpture, Greek Mythology and Religion, Ancient Greek Athletics, and Art/Archaeology in the Aegean. One of the great things about studying here is the ability to go see what we talk about in class - a lot of my classes actually take place in museums....

Χρόνια Πολλά! - Hróña Pollá!
Happy Birthday! This weekend I celebrated my 21st birthday in Athens. It isn’t really as big of a deal here, since Greeks can technically drink at the age of 18, but have wine with their meals and in familial settings from much earlier ages. But it was still my 21st birthday, so we tried to celebrate the American way! During the day, we went to the Temple of Poseidon, like I talked about...

"When all is said and done, the weather and love...
I found this quote this morning, and loved it, but saw no actual reason to post it to my blog until I stepped outside for my first class. This is supposed to be the coldest week of the winter, even with the possibility for snow. And then as I was walking to my classroom, small snow flurries started coming down! The mountains in Greece regularly receive snow, but snow in the city is a rarity. As...

Orientation
So tomorrow is our last day of orientation before classes start on Monday. It’s been really strange having like 90 other people come into a place that only me and seven other people have been for two weeks, but the majority of the people seem really nice. I’m excited for classes to begin so I can start making new friends organically through classes without the awkward orientation...

"You are headed for a land of sunshine"
That was the fortune cookie I got at my last american chinese food meal for four months (sad) and today it came true! In the afternoon the sun came out and it was immediately like 5-10 degrees warmer and more beautiful.
I’m slowly starting to get my bearings. Down my street is a coffeeshop, a bank, a small grocery store, a bakery, a cosmetics/toiletries store, and a popular student bar....

Rainy Season :(
So I know I certainly didn’t picture any rain in Greece. But unfortunately, the wintertime can often be overcast and rainy, which is what happened today. We got up to go to our dig with slight drizzles in the air, but nothing too bad. Unfortunately, when we got there, the rain picked up. Digging in dry dirt is a messy experience, but nothing compared to digging in the mud. Everything...
